SBH I Schulbau Hamburg

The still unbroken influx into the metropolis made it necessary to expand the Carl-Götze-School in Hamburg Groß-Borstel. The design for the new building combines the loose structure of the existing buildings and creates a new relation to the street space and an inviting entrance situation towards the school grounds. The prismatic division of the new building from two staggered components creates a newly designed entrance area on Brödermannsweg with access to the new building and schoolyard. The planned storey structure takes up the staggered heights from the existing building and develops them further as a design theme for the Carl-Götze-School. The existing stock of trees creates a very high quality exterior space. The prismatic shape of the building develops into a trapezoidal middle zone in the classrooms, which offers additional space for special educational offers in addition to the development of the school. The planned new building refers in scale and material of the facades to the existing buildings. The leitmotif for the new building is the restrained modernity with the local material of red brick. An open, vertically structured façade in the windowed areas in combination with larger closed brick surfaces at the corners creates an exciting contrast of transparency and mass.
